Alt-pop music duo Magdalena Bay, composed of couple Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, are headed back down under for their first-ever headline tour of Australia. Formed as teenagers in Miami, Tenenbaum and Lewin initially bonded over a shared love of music, forming the prog rock band Tabula Rasa before realizing their true calling lay in pop music. After exploring the complexities of the genre, they eventually found their signature sound, releasing a series of EPs and singles before their debut album, Mercurial World, earned widespread acclaim for its melodic hooks, meticulous production, and standout synth-pop vibes.
With their most recent album Imaginal Disk, Magdalena Bay takes a bold step forward. Written predominantly in 2023, the album features 15 tracks that blend experimental soundscapes with live instrumentation, marking a departure from the strictures of pop formulas. Produced largely in their home studio and mixed by Dave Fridmann, the album is a fresh fusion of organic warmth, moody atmosphere, and intellectual influences - from Star Trek to Solaris, Joni Mitchell to Lacanian psychoanalysis. It's a record that feels timeless and new, capturing the duo’s distinctive artistic evolution.
