Ben Kweller has been making emotionally intelligent music since he was a teenager fronting Radish in the mid-90s, but Cover the Mirrors feels like a different kind of record entirely. The Austin songwriter's most recent album is the first he's made from the other side of profound grief, and it sounds like it: a 12-song collection featuring Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman and The Flaming Lips, built from loss but not defined by it.
From the indie rock touchstone Sha Sha to the Grammy-nominated Go Fly a Kite, Kweller has spent two decades establishing himself as one of the essential American songwriters of his generation. Cover the Mirrors is something else again. The kind of album that only gets made once, and that asks something of you in return.
Ben Kweller plays The Princess Theatre for Open Season. For the songs that find you exactly when you need them.
Open Season is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland's Strategic Partnerships Fund, and by the Australian Government through the Office for the Arts Revive Live program.
